The essentialities or the determinations of reflection 371

Remark

Mention must be made here of the concept of the positive and negative as it occurs in arithmetic. The concept is presupposed there as known, but, since it is not grasped in its specific difference, it is not immune to insoluble difficulties and complications. We have just seen how the two real determinations of the positive and negative, outside the simple concept of their opposition, come to be. Namely, only a differentiated immediate existence stands in a first instance as ground, the simple immanent reflection of which is distinguished from its positedness, from the opposition itself.

This opposition, therefore, does not count as anything which is in and for itself, and, although it does apply to its diverse sides so that each is an opposite in general, the sides remain nonetheless indifferent to it and it is a matter of indifference which of the two is regarded as positive or negative. –
